Zika virus shares some similarities with dengue and West Nile viruses. Infection most often occurs as a result of being bitten by infected Aedes mosquitoes, although there have also been individual cases of transmission through sexual intercourse, blood transfusions, through the placenta or during childbirth (transmitting infection from mother to child). The infection outbreaks occur mainly in Africa, South-East Asia, the Pacific Islands, North and South America, as well as the Caribbean. Although there haven't been any cases of Zika fever in Europe yet, it's still considered a newly emerging infectious disease that could spread to other areas where Aedes mosquitoes thrive. There have been only observed single cases of Zika virus infection in Europe in people who have returned from regions where the pathogen is endemic.
The incubation period between the mosquito bite and the onset of clinical symptoms typically ranges from 2 to 14 days. The infection usually progresses mildly and causes symptoms such as low-grade fever, a spotty rash, skin itching, fatigue, muscle pain, small joint pain in the hands and feet, as well as headaches. Symptoms commonly disappear within a few days. Severe disease cases requiring hospitalisation are rare and mortality rates are low. The infection is dangerous for pregnant women as it can lead to foetal defects, such as microcephaly, severe brain defects and other congenital defects, or problems with hearing or vision after birth.
Treatment is symptomatic and mainly involves taking painkillers and antihistamines to relieve skin itching, as well as ensuring adequate body hydration.
To prevent infection, as with other mosquito-borne infections, it is recommended to use repellents and wear clothes that protect against these insects.
There is no vaccine against Zika virus.
