Chikungunya is a disease caused by the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, which can also transmit the dengue and Zika viruses. Chikungunya cannot be transmitted directly from one person to another. Its outbreaks are typically observed in tropical and subtropical regions, including Southeast Asia, Africa, North and South America, as well as the Pacific region. In Poland, due to unfavourable environmental conditions for mosquitoes, the risk of disease spreading is unlikely and cases of infection mainly concern travellers returning from disease-endemic regions.
The symptoms of the disease usually develop within 3-7 days (sometimes even 1-14 days) after being bitten by an infected mosquito and include: sudden deterioration of well-being, high fever (>39ºC), joint pain, skin lesions. Additional symptoms such as headaches, muscle pain, gastrointestinal disorders, facial swelling and eye redness may also occur. Serious complications of Chikungunya include respiratory failure, myocarditis, acute hepatitis, meningitis and may even lead to death. The elderly people over 65 years of age with chronic conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, are at the highest risk of developing a severe form of the illness.
Treatment is symptomatic and involves taking painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications to alleviate the symptoms.
To prevent infection, it is recommended to use repellents and wear appropriate clothes that protect against mosquitoes.
There is no vaccine against Chikungunya disease.

IMPORTANT! The test can be carried out as a screening test which helps diagnose the Chikungunya virus infection. Any positive results obtained with Chikungunya IgG/IgM Rapid Test Cassette must be confirmed by another diagnostic method (e.g. isolation of the virus genetic material or other serological tests). |
