Bitewing Tooth X-rat - what is it for?

X-ray examination shows the crowns of both lower and upper teeth in the wing area.  It allows for diagnosing caries in this area and assessing the tooth contact surfaces. With a bitewing X-ray, a dentist can easily diagnose the development of caries in hard-to-reach areas, such as interdental spaces.

How is the bitewing tooth X-ray examination performed?

It requires a dedicated positioner, allowing both upper and lower teeth to be included in the imaging field. The patient chews into the positioner in which the detector is placed. The lamp is pointed at a zero angle, perpendicular to the detector. This kind of imaging is used in conservative dentistry and dental prosthetics.

Duration of examination: about 20 minutes

Preparation for the bitewing tooth X-ray:

The doctor's referral to the examination is required

The referral should include:

• designation of the entity issuing the referral,
• patient details (full name, date of birth, sex, PESEL number, address and place of residence),
• surname and name(s) of the legal representative and the address of their residence, if the patient is a minor or a person incapacitated or incapable of informed consent
• purpose of and rationale for the examination
• preliminary clinical diagnosis of conducting a medical radiological procedure,
• signature and stamp of the person referring the patient for the examination or treatment.

A patient must attend the examination with previous test results (if any).
