Transfontanellar ultrasound is used to assess brain structures in newborns and infants. The fontanelles are the connections between the bones of a baby’s skull that have not yet ossified. Normally, the fontanelle should close at an appropriate rate.
Indications for the examination are:
- premature birth (before the 37th week);
- low birth weight;
- head injury;
- suspected hydrocephalus;
- defects of the brain and the nervous system.
Transfontanellar ultrasound is an imaging method involving ultrasonic waves. This technique is based on the phenomenon of reflection of an ultrasound beam against the structures of the organs.
- A non-invasive examination performed in children up to 1 year of age.
- Duration of the examination: approx. 15-20 minutes.
- The patient is provided with the results of the examination in the form of an impression with the ultrasound image. All documents are printed during the appointment, so the patient receives the original version of the results.
