Urine culture is otherwise known as a bacteriological (microbiological) urine test, which involves inoculating a urine sample provided by the patient to the laboratory on a special culture medium, the composition of which allows bacteria to multiply.
Urine culture when to perform the test?
The test is performed to identify the type of bacteria that are in the sample subjected to the test and to determine their drug susceptibility to antibiotics, that is, to perform the so-called antibiogram. This makes it possible to identify what strain caused the urinary tract infection and select the appropriate antibiotic.
An indication for the test may be a suspected urinary tract infection. The most common symptoms that may indicate the need for a urine culture are experiencing pain and burning during urination, frequent urination, a feeling of urinary urgency, or a disturbing color of urine.
Urinary tract infection may be an indication that a urine culture is needed
It is very important to correctly prepare the urine sample for the test in order for it to be authoritative and reliable.
