What are the responsibilities of a paediatric allergist?
Paediatric allergists diagnose and treat allergic conditions. Each doctor has the skills necessary to make a diagnosis based on the clinical picture and the results of the tests and examinations performed.
An allergy specialist is qualified, among others, to:
- take an allergy history and perform a physical examination;
- carry out skin tests to confirm or exclude allergies;
- conduct an analysis and provide advice in regard to food allergens;
- carry out function tests (pulmonary, nasal, etc.);
- conduct pharmacological treatment of allergic diseases and related conditions.
What causes allergies?
It is not possible to classify allergens as similar substances – they do not share a common chemical or structural composition. Some allergens are of plant or animal origin, while others are simple chemical compounds. In short, any substance can be an allergen. There are several groups of allergens:
- inhalant allergens;
- food allergens;
- contact allergens;
- allergenic medications;
- allergenic insect venom.
When is it necessary to consult an allergist?
Patients should visit an allergist if their allergy starts to manifest itself through, for example:
- hay fever accompanied by watery eyes, persistent sneezing and a scratchy throat (inhalant allergens);
- itchiness, burning skin, hives (contact allergens);
- persistent diarrhoea, shortness of breath, migraines, drowsiness and digestive system inflammation (food allergens).
If you observe any of the above symptoms, make sure to book a consultation with an allergist.
