Panoramic X-ray is one of the most accurate diagnostic options in the field of dentistry. This craniofacial X-ray is taken to obtain an accurate image of the area of the jaw, mandible, temporomandibular joints and maxillary sinuses. It allows an overall assessment of the oral cavity, shows the image of both hard and soft tissues within it, and detects dental and periodontal diseases at early stages.

How is the panoramic examination performed?

A panoramic X-ray is performed with a pantomograph in the standing position. The Frankfurt plane is aligned horizontally relative to the floor, the patient chews into a special teether (or a sponge in the case of edentulous patients) to separate the jaw from the mandible in the image so that the structures do not overlap and allow the correct assessment of the condition of the tooth crowns.

Duration of examination: about 20 minutes

Preparation for the panoramic X-ray:

The doctor's referral to the examination is required

The referral should include:

• designation of the entity issuing the referral,
• patient details (full name, date of birth, sex, PESEL number, address and place of residence),
• surname and name(s) of the legal representative and the address of their residence, if the patient is a minor or a person incapacitated or incapable of informed consent
• purpose of and rationale for the examination
• preliminary clinical diagnosis of conducting a medical radiological procedure,
• signature and stamp of the person referring the patient for the examination or treatment.

A patient must attend the examination with previous test results (if any).
