Gastroscopy is an endoscopic examination in which a flexible device with a visual track is inserted through the patient's mouth into the initial section of the descending part of the duodenum. During the examination, all the structures of the upper gastrointestinal tract – the oesophagus, stomach and part of the duodenum – can be assessed from the inside. In addition to optical diagnostics, it is also possible (if indicated) to take samples for microscopic analysis. As a standard procedure, the samples of gastric mucosa are also examined for the presence of Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
If the examination reveals any changes that require biopsies for histopathological analysis, this can be done during gastroscopy, but the histopathological analysis of the biopsies is a paid separately, too (in accordance with the current price list of Medicover Medical Centre).
Indications for examination
Gastroscopy is a basic step in diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases. It is particularly recommended in cases of:
- microcytic and macrocytic anaemia;
- suspected oesophageal and gastric cancer;
- abdominal pain;
- heartburn and indigestion;
- chronic diarrhoea;
- taking large amounts of anti-inflammatory medications;
- difficulty swallowing;
- family history of cancer.
Gastroscopy is also worth carrying out as part of a preventive examination due to the wide range of organs assessed.
The examination can be carried out under general anaesthesia. To select the examination under general anaesthesia, click here.
