Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination in which a flexible device with a visual track is inserted through the anus into the end of the large intestine. The last few centimetres of the small intestine are also examined. During the examination, it is possible to assess the inside of the large intestine. In addition to optical diagnostics, it is also possible (if indicated) to take samples for microscopic analysis and carry out procedures such as the removal of precancerous changes (polyps).

Indications for examination

Colonoscopy is a basic step in diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases; it is an examination that has been proven to help prevent colon cancer. It is particularly recommended in cases of:

• microcytic and macrocytic anaemia;
• suspected colon cancer;
• diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease;
• unintentional weight loss;
• rectal bleeding or tarry stools;
• abdominal pain;
• chronic diarrhoea or constipation;
• family history of cancer.

Everyone aged over 50 should have colonoscopy performed at least once in their lifetime as a preventive measure.

Colonoscopy requires special preparation, which includes following a special diet, temporarily discontinuing certain medications, and taking a prescribed purgative. The medication should be prescribed by the doctor referring you for the examination. If you need a prescription for the medication, contact the hotline at 500 900 500.

If the examination reveals the presence of polyps, they can be removed during colonoscopy. Removal of polyps with histopathological analysis is a service that needs to be paid separately (in accordance with the current price list of Medicover Medical Centre).

If the examination reveals any changes that require biopsies for histopathological analysis, this can be done during colonoscopy, but the histopathological analysis of the biopsies is a paid separately, too (in accordance with the current price list of Medicover Medical Centre).

A referral from a doctor S NOT required for the examination. Please ensure that on the day of your visit, the patient has the following with them:

• medical documentation concerning chronic diseases,
• a list of medications they take regularly,
• the results of recent laboratory tests.

This information will enable the doctor to conduct a comprehensive and safe consultation.

• The examination is only carried out on adults.
• The price of the service does not include the removal of polyps.
• We do not carry out video examinations.
• The doctors carrying out the examination do not issue sick leaves.
