Fibrinogen is a protein of the clotting system that is essential for clot formation. Determination of fibrinogen is applicable in cases of abnormal prothrombin time (PT) and time activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), as well as in patients with prolonged episodes of bleeding from an unexplained cause. The test is also helpful in diagnosing the syndrome of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).
