APTT test

Activated partial thromboplastin time (kaolin-kefalin time) is one of the indicators of blood coagulation. This time is dependent on the activity of plasma coagulation factors II, V, VIII, IX, X, XI and XII and I which constitute the intrinsic coagulation pathway.

A prolonged kaolin-cephalin APTT time indicates a deficiency in the activity of one of the mentioned factors. It is a basic parameter for monitoring treatment with unfractionated heparin and some other anticoagulants.

Preparation for the APTT test

The APTT test does not require any special preparation, and involves drawing blood from an elbow vein. The test is performed on an empty stomach - about 12 hours must pass from the last meal to the time the blood is drawn. 

APTT when to perform?

The APTT determination is helpful in the diagnosis of clotting factor deficiencies (hemiphilias), firbynogen deficiencies, the presence of lupus anticoagulant. APTT should be performed prophylactically in pregnancy - reduced APTT levels may be associated with an increased risk of hemorrhage.
