Ultrasound examination to assess the patency of the portal system, the direction of blood flow. It aims to determine or exclude the presence of hypertension in the portal system.
This examination is used for the initial diagnosis of pathologies of the portal circulation. Doppler ultrasound examination of the portal system of the liver allows to recognize:
- developmental abnormalities of the portal system,
- portal hypertension,
- complications after a liver transplant,
- presence of gas in the portal system,
- calcification of the walls of the portal vein,
- pathological masses in the portal vein and its tributaries and branches,
- fistulas,
- the effect of drugs on the portal circulation,
- right heart failure.
Doppler ultrasound, using the Doppler phenomenon, allows to assess the speed and direction of blood flow in the vessels. Ultrasonic waves falling on blood cells flowing in blood vessels change their frequency in proportion to the speed of blood flow
- The duration of the examination is about 15-20 minutes.
