Spine X-ray AP View (Scoliosis)
A radiological examination that uses X-rays to produce images of internal body structures.
It enables the detection of postural abnormalities, specifically lateral curvature of the spine, which most commonly appears in adolescents. The test is also performed in cases of waist and shoulder blade asymmetry, rib hump, and uneven shoulders and hips. Adults may also undergo the examination. It is essential before starting rehabilitation.
Preparation for the Examination
This is a painless and brief procedure but requires special preparation:
- First and foremost, the bowels should be cleared of faecal matter and gas by following a specific diet and using over-the-counter medications that reduce bloating;
- The day before the examination, follow a light, low-residue diet (e.g. rice, pasta, broth, clear soups, white bread, cooked lean meats such as chicken or turkey, and fish such as cod or hake), excluding fibre-rich foods (wholemeal bread, rye bread, wheat bran, cereals, coarse groats), flatulence-inducing foods (e.g. peas, beans, cabbage), carbonated drinks, and fruit juices. A bloating-reducing preparation (e.g. Espumisan) should be taken – 3 times a day, 2 to 4 capsules each time, and on the day of the examination – 2 capsules on an empty stomach in the morning;
- On the day of the examination: ensure bowel movement; be fasting or at least 6 hours after a light meal; do not smoke or chew gum.
The above preparation is sufficient in most cases, but for individuals suffering from constipation, it is recommended to use a laxative the day before the test, in accordance with the patient information leaflet.
In case of any doubts regarding the preparation, it is recommended to consult the referring doctor.
You will need to undress to your underwear before the examination. Depending on the referral, you will need to position yourself appropriately.
Important information
- Patients referred from outside the Medicover network are expected to present the referral in a printed form.
- Patients referred for the examination following an in-person visit at Medicover have either present a paper referral or ask for it to be printed at the reception desk.
- Patients who had a teleconsultation at Medicover are asked to inform reception that the referral was issued electronically.
X-rays are not recommended during pregnancy. Any X-ray performed on women of childbearing age should ideally take place within the first 12 days of the menstrual cycle (unless the doctor advises otherwise) to eliminate the risk of complications from a possible pregnancy.
Please note! A printed referral is required to carry out the examination.

The test is used to evaluate post-traumatic lesions in the cervical spine and vertebral instability, and in imaging of intervertebral spaces, mobility of the spine, and degenerative lesions.

It is performed in order to identify possible vertebral abnormalities, and to detect such lesions as ankylosing spondylitis, displacement of intervertebral discs (spondylolisthesis), osteoporosis, and stress lesions. It also enables to evaluate postural defects (e.g. scoliosis, excessive thoracic hyperkyphosis), and degenerative, post-traumatic and neoplastic lesions.

It enables to detect postural abnormalities, and traumatic, degenerative and inflammatory lesions. It is also performed if tumours, metastases, spondylolisthesis and osteoporosis are suspected.
