What is obstructive sleep apnoea?

This disorder is characterised by a blockage of airflow in the upper airway during sleep, which occurs at the level of the throat. When airflow is blocked, oxygen levels in the blood drop, which in turn stimulates the respiratory muscles and leads to night-time awakenings.

Sleep apnoea has a significant impact on the quality of sleep and the ability to function during the day. If left untreated, it can lead to serious health complications such as:

• High blood pressure,
• Increased risk of heart attack,
• Stroke,
• Irregular heartbeat.

3. During the consultation, the doctor will discuss the results with the patient and make additional recommendations. If necessary, the doctor will refer the patient for additional otolaryngology or cardiology consultation.

• At night: loud and irregular snoring, increased physical activity during sleep, excessive sweating, shortness of breath and choking leading to fear of falling asleep again, frequent urination, heart palpitations, and heartburn;
