Obstetric Doppler ultrasound is used to assess the placental flows and the foetal organs. The examination assesses the blood supply in various foetal structures and analyses the flows in small vessels which are not visible on standard obstetric ultrasonography.
The obstetric Doppler ultrasound assesses such aspects as:
- uterine artery;
- umbilical artery;
- cerebral circulation;
- foetal venous circulation;
- renal arteries;
- visceral vessels of the foetus;
- placenta and umbilical cord.
The examination is indicated in the following cases:
- multiple pregnancy;
- growth disorders in the foetus;
- prior or current risk of premature childbirth;
- prior miscarriage;
- prior or current high-risk pregnancy;
- serological conflict;
- premature labour contractions;
- cardiac arrhythmias in the foetus;
- cardiac defects and conditions in the foetus;
- intrauterine infection;
- low quantity of the amniotic fluid;
- genetic diseases;
- malformations.
By using the Doppler phenomenon, the Doppler ultrasonography makes it possible to assess the speed and directs of blood flow in the vessels. Falling onto the blood cells flowing in blood vessels, ultrasonic waves change their frequency proportionally to the speed of blood flow.
- The examination does not require any particular preparation.
- The examination takes approximately 15-20 minutes.
- The results are given to patients in the form of a medical description along with an ultrasound picture. The whole documentation is printed during an appointment and patients receive the original copy of their results. The description of the result is also available online.
- There are no contraindications to this examination. Ultrasonography is safe for both the mother and the baby.
