This test is performed using a blood sample to determine glucose levels 2 hours after consuming 75g of glucose. It is part of the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). It must be performed together with a fasting glucose measurement. Post-load glucose measurements are used to diagnose carbohydrate metabolism disorders (diabetes, neonatal hypoglycemia, idiopathic hypoglycemia). Indications include preventive screening, monitoring of at-risk patients, and testing in pregnant women. A known diagnosis of diabetes is a contraindication to the test.
If there is a positive history of hyperglycemia symptoms (increased thirst, frequent urination, unintentional weight loss), a capillary blood glucose test with a glucometer should be performed before administering the 75g of glucose to confirm the symptoms. If the test result is above 200 mg/dl, the glucose load should not be performed, and the patient should consult a physician.
The patient should arrive for the test by 9:00 AM with glucose purchased at a pharmacy.
- Blood is drawn into an EDTA tube, following standard procedures including skin disinfection, application of a tourniquet, and post-draw compression at the puncture site, which lasts several minutes.
- The blood draw takes approximately a few to several seconds. If the patient is not properly prepared, the test result may not be fully reliable.
- The blood sample should be collected in the morning hours.
- Required preparation several days before the test:
- Do not consume alcohol for 2–3 days before the test.
- Refrain from drinking coffee and tea for at least 12 hours prior to the test.
- Avoid sources of stress as much as possible.
- The patient should be fasting – meaning no food intake for about 12 hours before the test.
- In the morning, one glass of water may be consumed.
- If possible, the blood sample should be collected before taking any morning medications, unless otherwise advised by the doctor.
- Before the test, the patient should rest in a sitting position for 10–15 minutes.
- Physical activity, even moderate (e.g., walking, climbing stairs), may alter lab test values, especially in diabetic patients.
- The patient should arrive for the test by 9:30 AM.
- Test results are available within 3 business days.
- Results can be collected at the reception desk of any Medicover Centre.
- Online access to results is available via Medicover Online (a password must be obtained at the Medicover Centre reception).
