Gastroscopy is an endoscopic examination in which a flexible device with a visual track is inserted through the patient's mouth into the initial section of the duodenum. It allows the assessment of the inside of the oesophagus, stomach, and part of the duodenum. In addition to assessing the upper gastrointestinal tract, it is also possible to take tissue samples for microscopic analysis. As a standard procedure, the samples are also examined for the presence of Helicobacter pylori bacteria.
If the examination reveals any changes that require biopsies for histopathological analysis, this can be done during gastroscopy, but the histopathological analysis of the biopsies is a paid separately, too (in accordance with the current price list of Medicover Medical Centre).
Indications for examination
Gastroscopy is a basic step in diagnosing gastrointestinal diseases. It is particularly recommended in cases of:
- anaemia (both resulting from iron deficiency and other causes);
- suspected oesophageal or gastric cancer;
- recurrent or chronic abdominal pain;
- frequent heartburn, burning sensation in the oesophagus, digestive problems;
- long-term diarrhoea;
- frequent taking of anti-inflammatory medications;
- difficulty swallowing food or liquids;
- family history of gastrointestinal cancer.
Gastroscopy is also worth carrying out as part of a preventive examination due to the wide range of organs assessed.
At Medicover Endoscopy Laboratory, we always focus on quality and carry out examinations in accordance with current medical standards using state-of-the-art equipment with HD resolution.
