A blood test is performed to determine the levels of gamma-glutamyltransferase.

Measurement of gamma-glutamyltransferase activity is used in the diagnosis and treatment of biliary hepatitis. GGT is an enzyme found in the kidneys and liver.

An increase in activity is observed in:

• intrahepatic and extrahepatic cholestasis,
• cholangitis,
• hepatitis,
• alcoholic liver disease.

What is GGT?

GGT (gamma-glutamyltransferase) is an enzyme found in the cells of many organs.

The GGT test is mainly used in the diagnosis of liver and biliary diseases. GGT, the level of which is tested in blood serum, comes mainly from the bile ducts and liver.

The GGT level examination is one of the elements of the liver function tests (liver panel). Typically in addition to this test, for a comprehensive assessment of liver health, it is necessary to determine the levels of aminotransferases and alkaline phosphatase (ALP).

Indications for the examination - when should GGT levels be tested?

Increased levels of GGT can be a symptom of liver disorders or developing gallbladder stones.

In addition, it can indicate cholestasis, i.e. bile obstruction in the bile ducts. Cholestasis is a serious health emergency because the acids in the bile cause liver cell damage and digestive disorders.

Abnormal levels of GGT are also found in people with liver cancer, in those who develop alcoholic liver disease or have developed hepatitis infection. If any of these diseases is suspected, the doctor may recommend a GGT level test.

GGT testing can also be performed to determine the cause of elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels, due to biliary or liver disease as well as bone disease.

How is the GGT test performed?

The GGT levels are tested in the blood serum. During the test, the nurse collects a small sample of blood from the cubital vein. Before collection, the skin at the injection site is disinfected, and a tourniquet is applied to the patient. The blood is collected into a tube, and once the collection is completed, the injection site should be pressed with a gauze pad for a few minutes - this will prevent bruising. The entire test, including preparation, takes only a few minutes.

GGT - how to prepare for the blood test?

It is important to prepare properly for the examination. Blood should be collected on an empty stomach. What does it mean? The patient should refrain from eating and drinking beverages other than water for 8 to 12 hours before the sample collection. This recommendation applies to all blood sample tests since the consumption of a meal can affect the result, and potential deviations from the norm or changes in the proportions and levels of the parameters tested are difficult to predict.

The day before the examination, it is recommended to avoid very fatty, heavy, fried meals and dishes.

It is also inadvisable to consume even small amounts of alcohol (2-3 days before the examination).

Smoking can also increase GGT levels.

On the day of the test, it is permitted to drink a small amount of water, so that the sample collection will be easier.

Blood should be collected in the morning, but in most cases, this is not a problem - the collection centres are open at hours adjusted to the blood collection requirements.

Before the test, rest in a sitting position for about 10-15 minutes, it is advisable to come to the collection centre early enough to avoid rush and ensure yourself comfort and reliable test results.

Patients on chronic medication should consult their doctor regarding taking the morning dose of drugs on the day of the sample collection.

Also, inform your doctor if you take herbal medications or preparations.

In each case, it is up to the doctor to decide how a patient should prepare for the examination.

Important information

• The test involves collecting blood into an EDTA tube, following the collection procedure, disinfecting the skin, applying a tourniquet and applying pressure to the injection site after the procedure. The entire procedure takes a few minutes.

• The injection itself takes several (less than 20) seconds.

• No special preparation for the examination is required.

• The sample collection should be done in the morning.

GGT normal results

• The GGTP normal levels depend on the sex of the patient. Normal levels for men and women are slightly different.

• Interpretation of the test results is up to the doctor and depends on the patient's general health and the results of other ordered laboratory tests.

• The test results are available within 3 working days.
