Determination of fructosamine levels in the blood. Fructosamine testing allows assessment of blood glucose levels over the past 3 weeks.
Fructosamine level determination is used in the diagnosis of diabetes mellitus after a prior test of the level of hemoglobin glycated. The test is performed in the monitoring of diabetes pre-pregnancy diabetes and diabetes in pregnancy.
Fructosamine is a glycation product of plasma proteins (mainly albumin). It is formed in the reaction of glucose with the amino group of the lysine residues of lysine residues of these proteins. The concentration of fructosamine reflects the average glycemia over the past 3 weeks. Fructosamine is determined, for example when HbA1c is not reliable, sometimes in monitoring the treatment of pre-pregnancy and gestational diabetes.
